The idea

“Der Hinweis auf + accusative” is a pointer or notice about something. “Rechtzeitig” means in good time. “Jemandem Bescheid sagen” takes a dative person (mir, Ihnen). “Jemandem etwas ersparen” (to save someone something) takes dative person and accusative thing. “Gut zu wissen” is a short casual reply.

Other ways to say it

“Danke, dass du Bescheid gesagt hast!” – Casual and warm; common in messages.

“Gut zu wissen, danke!” – Casual and short; fine for small pieces of news.

“Vielen Dank für die rechtzeitige Information.” – Formal; suits emails from offices or landlords.

Examples

  • Danke für den rechtzeitigen Hinweis auf die Sperrung. Thanks for the timely heads-up about the closure.
  • So kannst du noch einen anderen Weg planen. That way you can still plan another route.
  • Gut, dass du mir vorher Bescheid gesagt hast.It is good that you let me know beforehand.
  • Ich habe die neue Meldung gerade gesehen.I just saw the new notice.
  • Deine Nachricht erspart mir einen unnötigen Umweg.Your message saves me an unnecessary detour.
  • Dann hat der Hinweis seinen Zweck erfüllt. Then the heads-up has served its purpose.

Watch out

“Gut, dass du mich vorher Bescheid gesagt hast.” → “Gut, dass du mir vorher Bescheid gesagt hast.”: In “Bescheid sagen”, Bescheid is the accusative object, so the person must be dative: mir. Learners use mich because English “tell me” has no visible case.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Thanks for the timely heads-up about the closure.

    Show answer or example answer

Danke für den rechtzeitigen Hinweis auf die Sperrung.

“Danke für” takes the accusative: “den rechtzeitigen Hinweis”, masculine with -en. “Auf die Sperrung” is accusative after auf and names the topic.

  2. Put the words in order: Bescheid / dass / du / gesagt / Gut / hast / mir / vorher

    Show answer or example answer

Gut, dass du mir vorher Bescheid gesagt hast.

“Gut, dass …” drops “Es ist” at the start, as speech often does. In the dass-clause, the perfect “gesagt hast” goes to the end, and “mir” is dative.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then the heads-up has served its purpose.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann hat der Hinweis seinen Zweck erfüllt.

“Seinen Zweck erfüllen” means to serve its purpose; seinen refers back to der Hinweis, so it is masculine accusative.
