The idea

“Abhängen von + dative” is separable (hängt … ab). When a clause follows, “davon” stands in the main clause and the clause gives the content: “davon, ob/wann/wie …”. The synonym “ankommen auf + accusative” works the same way with “darauf”. “Sofern” and “vorausgesetzt, dass” introduce conditions; the verb goes to the end.

Other ways to say it

“Das kommt darauf an, wann die Lieferung da ist.” – Neutral and very common in speech.

“Kommt drauf an.” – Casual short answer; “drauf” is colloquial for darauf.

“Das ist abhängig vom Liefertermin.” – Neutral to formal; uses the adjective abhängig.

Examples

  • Das hängt davon ab, wann die Lieferung ankommt. That depends on when the delivery arrives.
  • Könnten wir bei früher Ankunft sofort beginnen?Could we start immediately if it arrives early?
  • Ja, sofern die restlichen Vorbereitungen abgeschlossen sind.Yes, provided the remaining preparations are complete.
  • Dann gibt es also zwei Bedingungen. Then there are two conditions.
  • Genau, Ankunft allein reicht noch nicht.Exactly; arrival alone is not enough yet.
  • Ich notiere beide Voraussetzungen für den Beginn.I will note both prerequisites for starting.

Watch out

“Das hängt ab, wann die Lieferung ankommt.” → “Das hängt davon ab, wann die Lieferung ankommt.”: Abhängen needs its preposition von. When a clause follows, German keeps a placeholder, davon, in the main clause; leaving it out sounds incomplete.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: That depends on when the delivery arrives.

    Show answer or example answer

Das hängt davon ab, wann die Lieferung ankommt.

“Hängt” is in second place and “ab” closes the main clause after “davon”. The wann-clause sends the separable verb “ankommt” to its end unsplit.

  2. Put the words in order: abgeschlossen / die / Ja / restlichen / sind / sofern / Vorbereitungen

    Show answer or example answer

Ja, sofern die restlichen Vorbereitungen abgeschlossen sind.

“Sofern” means provided that and sends “sind” to the end. “Abgeschlossen” is a participle used as an adjective: completed.

  3. Write this sentence in German: I will note both prerequisites for starting.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich notiere beide Voraussetzungen für den Beginn.

“Voraussetzungen” is the plural of die Voraussetzung (prerequisite). “Für den Beginn” is accusative after für.
