The idea

“Gern geschehen” is a fixed reply to thanks; shorter forms are “Gern!” or “Gerne!”. “Heraussuchen” is a separable verb, but after the modal konnte it stays in one piece as an infinitive at the end. The dative dir names the person who benefits: jemandem etwas heraussuchen. Helfen also takes the dative, as in “Ich habe dir dabei wirklich gern geholfen”. If the other person offers something in return, “Dafür brauchst du nichts zu tun” declines it warmly.

Other ways to say it

“Keine Ursache!” – Neutral and very common; fits friends, neighbours and colleagues alike.

“Nichts zu danken!” – Casual to neutral; plays the favour down a little more.

“Sehr gern, jederzeit wieder.” – Warm; signals that you would happily help again.

  • Kann ich dir dafür etwas abnehmen? Can I take something off your hands in return?

Watch out

“Du bist willkommen.” → “Gern geschehen.”: English “You are welcome” is translated word for word here, but in German “Du bist willkommen” means you are welcome as a guest. It is not a reply to thanks.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: You are welcome; I could find the list for you quickly.

    Show answer or example answer

Gern geschehen, ich konnte dir die Liste schnell heraussuchen.

The clause after the comma gives a concrete detail. Konnte, the past of können, sends the separable verb heraussuchen to the end as one word.

  2. Put the words in order: dabei / dir / geholfen / gern / habe / Ich / wirklich

    Show answer or example answer

Ich habe dir dabei wirklich gern geholfen.

Helfen takes the dative, so it is dir, not dich. The perfect uses haben; dabei points back to the task, and “wirklich gern” stresses that it was a pleasure.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then I will simply thank you once again.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann bedanke ich mich einfach noch einmal.

Sich bedanken is reflexive: ich bedanke mich. “Einfach noch einmal” turns the repeated thanks into a light close instead of a debt to repay.

Use it today

A neighbour thanks you for watering her plants while she was away. Reply in two sentences: say you were glad to help and mention one small detail of what you did.
