The idea

With passen, the appointment is the subject and the person is dative: “Der Termin passt mir”, “Passt Ihnen zehn Uhr?” “Einverstanden sein mit + dative” expresses agreement and sounds a little more formal. “Bei etwas bleiben” means to stick with it: “Bleiben wir bei vierzehn Uhr?” Germans often give appointment times in the 24-hour clock, especially in writing.

Other ways to say it

“Mittwoch geht bei mir.” – Casual and very common in speech and chat messages.

“Mittwoch um 14 Uhr ist für mich in Ordnung.” – Neutral; clear in emails because it repeats day and time.

“Der vorgeschlagene Termin ist mir recht.” – Neutral to formal; “mir recht sein” means it suits me.

Examples

  • Der vorgeschlagene Mittwoch passt mir zeitlich gut.The proposed Wednesday works well for me timewise.
  • Bleiben wir dann bei vierzehn Uhr?Shall we stick to two o’clock, then?
  • Mit vierzehn Uhr bin ich ebenfalls einverstanden. Two o’clock is fine with me too.
  • Ich schicke dir dazu die Einladung.I will send you the invitation for it.
  • Für mich steht der Termin damit fest. That confirms the appointment for me.
  • Dann kann ich den Raum verbindlich anfragen. Then I can formally enquire about the room.

Watch out

“Der Mittwoch passt mich gut.” → “Der Mittwoch passt mir gut.”: Passen in the sense “to suit” takes a dative person, so the pronoun is mir, not mich. The same holds for Ihnen in formal speech: “Passt Ihnen der Mittwoch?”

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: The proposed Wednesday works well for me timewise.

    Show answer or example answer

Der vorgeschlagene Mittwoch passt mir zeitlich gut.

“Der vorgeschlagene Mittwoch” takes the weak ending -e after der. “Passt” agrees with Mittwoch, “mir” is dative, and “zeitlich” narrows the statement to timing.

  2. Put the words in order: bin / ebenfalls / einverstanden / ich / Mit / Uhr / vierzehn

    Show answer or example answer

Mit vierzehn Uhr bin ich ebenfalls einverstanden.

“Mit vierzehn Uhr” is dative after mit and opens the sentence, so “bin ich” follows. “Ebenfalls” means likewise and suits slightly formal speech.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then I can formally enquire about the room.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann kann ich den Raum verbindlich anfragen.

“Dann” in first position pushes “kann” before “ich”, and the infinitive “anfragen” goes last. “Verbindlich anfragen” means to make a binding request rather than just asking.

Use it today

A colleague suggests Thursday at 10 for a planning meeting. Reply in two sentences that the day suits you and that you accept the time.
