The idea

Sich beziehen auf + accusative is reflexive: die Aufgabe bezieht sich auf Seite 16. “Seite” needs no article before a number. Sechzehn and sechzig drop the s of sechs. Gehören zu asks whether something is part of the task. Bearbeiten means to work on an exercise. Undeutlich means unclear, hard to read. In school contexts, parents usually use Sie with teachers.

Other ways to say it

“Welche Seite ist für morgen dran?” – Casual, typical between pupils; dran sein means to be due.

“Könnten Sie mir die Seitenzahl noch einmal bestätigen?” – Polite question for a teacher, by message or in person.

Examples

  • Bezieht sich die Aufgabe auf Seite sechzehn oder sechzig?Does the task refer to page sixteen or sixty?
  • Im Heft steht die Zahl sehr undeutlich. The number in the exercise book is very unclear.
  • Gehört auch die zweite Übung dazu?Does the second exercise belong to it too?
  • Wir fragen nach Seite und Aufgabennummer.Let us ask about both the page and exercise number.
  • Ich möchte nicht das falsche Kapitel bearbeiten.I do not want to work on the wrong chapter.
  • Dann notieren wir die bestätigten Angaben vollständig. Then let us write down the confirmed details in full.

Watch out

“Bezieht die Aufgabe auf Seite sechzehn?” → “Bezieht sich die Aufgabe auf Seite sechzehn?”: In this meaning beziehen is reflexive. Without sich the verb needs an object, as in eine Wohnung beziehen (to move into a flat), and the sentence makes no sense.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Does the task refer to page sixteen or sixty?

    Show answer or example answer

Bezieht sich die Aufgabe auf Seite sechzehn oder sechzig?

Verb-first question with reflexive “sich” after the verb; “auf Seite sechzehn oder sechzig” offers the two readings.

  2. Put the words in order: auch / dazu / die / Gehört / Übung / zweite

    Show answer or example answer

Gehört auch die zweite Übung dazu?

“Gehört … dazu” asks whether something is included; “die zweite Übung” is the subject with an ordinal number.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then let us write down the confirmed details in full.

Dann notieren wir die bestätigten Angaben vollständig.

“Notieren wir” is a suggestion; “die bestätigten Angaben” is accusative plural, and “vollständig” means in full.
