Some German verbs have a prefix that separates when the verb is conjugated in a main clause. Learn the whole verb and its prefix together.

The idea

In Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf, stehe is the conjugated part and auf closes the sentence. Questions use the same separation: Rufst du mich an? With a modal, the separable verb stays together as an infinitive at the end: Ich muss einkaufen. Not every prefixed verb is separable, so check new verbs rather than guessing from appearance.

Examples

  • Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf.
  • Lea kauft heute ein.
  • Wir rufen dich morgen an.
  • Der Film fängt um acht Uhr an.
  • Kommst du heute mit?
  • Ich kann morgen einkaufen.

Watch out

Do not drop the prefix: rufen and anrufen are different verbs. Do not separate an infinitive after a modal.

Try it yourself

  1. Ich ___ um sechs Uhr ___. (aufstehen)

    Show answer or example answer

    stehe … auf

Aufstehen separates into ich stehe … auf in a main clause.

  2. Wir ___ unsere Freundin ___. (anrufen)

    Show answer or example answer

    rufen … an

With wir, the conjugated part is rufen and the prefix an goes at the end.

  3. Ich muss heute ___. (einkaufen)

    Show answer or example answer

    einkaufen

After muss, the whole infinitive einkaufen stays together.

Use it today

Describe when you get up and whom you call. Then rewrite one action with müssen so that the infinitive stays together.
