The idea

Heißen gives the name of a street. Useful spelling words: der Bindestrich (hyphen), zusammen (as one word), groß/klein (capital/lower case). German street names often end in -straße, -weg or -platz and are written as one word unless they contain a name. Zurücklesen is separable. Der Wohnungszusatz (flat detail) is masculine: den Wohnungszusatz.

Other ways to say it

“Lindenweg schreibt man zusammen, in einem Wort.” – Stresses that the street is one word.

“Die Hausnummer ist 7b, das b klein und ohne Leerzeichen.” – Precise for forms where spacing matters.

Examples

  • Und welche Hausnummer gehört dazu? And what building number goes with it?
  • Sieben b, mit einem kleinen b.Seven b, with a lowercase b.
  • Ich lese die Adresse vollständig zurück.I will read the complete address back.

Watch out

“Bitte ergänzen Sie auch die Wohnungszusatz.” → “Bitte ergänzen Sie auch den Wohnungszusatz.”: Compound nouns take the gender of their last part: der Zusatz, so der Wohnungszusatz. The feminine Wohnung at the start does not decide the gender.
