The idea

“Sich etwas teilen” (to share something) uses a dative reflexive: “Wir teilen uns das Fach.” Direction words follow nach: nach links, nach rechts, nach hinten. Stellen is used for upright objects such as a container (die Dose); legen is for things lying flat. Between flatmates the du-imperative is normal: “Bitte lass hinten etwas Platz frei” uses lass, the du-imperative of lassen, without -st.

Other ways to say it

“Welches Fach ist noch frei?” – Neutral question when you move in and do not know the system yet.

“Hat hier jeder ein eigenes Fach?” – Asks about the house rule before choosing a shelf.

Examples

  • Kann ich dieses Fach für mein Essen benutzen? Can I use this shelf for my food?
  • Das obere Fach teilen wir uns.We share the top shelf.
  • Dann stelle ich meine Dose nach links. Then I will put my container on the left.
  • Bitte lass hinten etwas Platz frei. Please leave some space at the back.
  • Soll ich meinen Namen darauf schreiben?Should I write my name on it?
  • Ja, so verwechseln wir die Dosen nicht.Yes, that way we will not mix up the containers.

Watch out

“Bitte lässt hinten etwas Platz frei.” → “Bitte lass hinten etwas Platz frei.”: The du-imperative drops the -st ending and the subject; verbs that change their vowel only in the du present (lässt) return to the stem vowel: lass.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Can I use this shelf for my food?

    Show answer or example answer

Kann ich dieses Fach für mein Essen benutzen?

The modal “Kann” opens the question; “für mein Essen” names the purpose, and “benutzen” closes the sentence as infinitive.

  2. Put the words in order: Dann / Dose / ich / links / meine / nach / stelle

    Show answer or example answer

Dann stelle ich meine Dose nach links.

“Dann” starts the sentence, so “stelle” comes second; “nach links” gives the direction, so no case question arises.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Yes, that way we will not mix up the containers.

    Show answer or example answer

Ja, so verwechseln wir die Dosen nicht.

“So” here means in this way; “nicht” stands at the end to negate the whole action of mixing up the containers.

Use it today

Write a short message for a flat group chat asking which fridge shelf is still free and suggesting that everyone labels their containers.
