The idea
Mira lends the lamp with a demonstrative pronoun at the front: “Die kannst du heute benutzen”, where die stands for die Lampe and können gives permission. Helfen takes the dative: “Die Lampe hilft dort nur ihm”. Placement uses stellen with the accusative, “stellt sie auf einen festen kleinen Tisch”, and the note uses a passive-like phrase: “steht darauf” (is written on it).
Words from the story

Watch out
Readers may think Henning keeps the lamp or that Mira takes it back at once. He first puts it in his flat, then returns it to the hallway: “Er bringt sie wieder in den Flur.” Only after the real light is repaired does the lamp go back to Mira.
