The idea
The digitisation note is the key: “Die Jahreszahl auf dem Dateinamen bezeichnet den Scan, nicht die Aufnahme”, a clear “nicht”-contrast between two nouns. Its last sentence uses an ob-clause as subject: “Ob das Foto unmittelbar von der Eröffnung stammt, ist noch nicht belegt”. The invitation gives a full date with am: “am 14. Mai 1996”. Note “stammt von einer unbekannten Person” for an unknown author.

Ausgangslage: Ein fiktives Stadtteilarchiv bereitet eine kleine Ausstellung vor. Bei einem Foto widersprechen sich die Jahreszahlen. Prüfe, ob ein Datum das fotografierte Ereignis oder nur eine spätere Bearbeitung bezeichnet.
Dokument A, Beschriftung auf der Fotokopie: „Eröffnung des Gartenhauses, 1998.“ Die Schrift stammt von einer unbekannten Person. Das Originalfoto trägt auf der Rückseite kein Jahr.
Dokument B, Brief im Archiv: „Zur Eröffnung des Gartenhauses am 14. Mai 1996 laden wir die Nachbarschaft herzlich ein.“ Auf dem Brief sind das Gartenhaus und dieselbe Adresse genannt wie auf dem Foto.
Dokument C, Notiz zur Digitalisierung: „Foto Gartenhaus am 7. Juni 1998 eingescannt. Die Jahreszahl auf dem Dateinamen bezeichnet den Scan, nicht die Aufnahme. Ob das Foto unmittelbar von der Eröffnung stammt, ist noch nicht belegt.“
Eine gute neue Bildunterschrift darf die gesicherte Eröffnung im Jahr 1996 nennen. Sie darf jedoch nicht ohne weitere Belege behaupten, dass das Foto genau an diesem Tag aufgenommen wurde.

Watch out
Readers may correct the caption to “opening, 14 May 1996” and stop there. That goes too far: the opening date is proven, but “Ob das Foto unmittelbar von der Eröffnung stammt, ist noch nicht belegt.” The 1998 label is also not proof of anything; it comes from an unknown person and matches the scan year.
