The idea
The waiter’s question is reported indirectly with the verb at the end: “wo er sitzen möchte”. A relative clause describes the drawing: “die er von seinem Platz aus gut sehen konnte”, where “von … aus” means “from”. Milan’s final request uses a polite Konjunktiv II in an ob-clause: “ob der kleine Fenstertisch vielleicht wieder frei wäre”. These are useful models for asking about a table in German.
Words from the story

Watch out
Readers may assume someone at the restaurant judged Milan for eating alone. Nobody does: the waiter “fragte jedoch nur, wo er sitzen möchte”, and “Niemand schien seinen einzelnen Platz seltsam zu finden.” The pressure to explain comes from Milan himself, which is why his last request needs no explanation.

Retell A table for one in four German sentences: the opening situation, the difficulty, the key observation and the outcome. Then write one plausible alternative ending and mark it clearly as your own invention. Compare your retelling with the text to check that you did not invent details unintentionally.
