The idea
The colleague apologises with an indirect question in the past: “Ich wusste nicht, wem die Tasse gehört”, where wem is dative because gehören needs it. Nachfragen is separable: “Er fragt in der Küche nach”. Sortieren nach means to sort by: “Das Kind sortiert die Steine nach Farben”. Note the adjective after keine: “steht keine gelbe Tasse im Schrank”.
Words from the story

Watch out
A reader may suspect that someone took the cup on purpose. The colleague simply did not know the owner: “Ich wusste nicht, wem die Tasse gehört.” Her child used it as a container for sorting coloured stones.
