The idea
Ordinal numbers take adjective endings after the article: “Auf dem ersten steht”, “auf dem zweiten”, “auf dem dritten”, all dative after auf. Sollen expresses a task given by someone else: “Ihr Nachbar Luis soll die Pflanzen gießen”. Deshalb sends the verb straight after it: “Deshalb ruft er Kim an”, with the separable prefix an at the end.
Words from the story
die Fensterbank – windowsill
die Blüte – blossom, flower
gießen – to water (plants)
das Schild – label, sign
der Nachbar – neighbour
der Hinweis – note, instruction
schwer – heavy

Watch out
Some readers think Luis lost the labels or mixed them up. The text blames the wind: “Am Abend kommt ein Wind durch das offene Fenster. Zwei Schilder fallen auf den Boden.” Luis only finds the label at the large plant still in place.
