David’s reason is a dass-clause: “dass er nicht auf einem veröffentlichten Foto erscheinen wollte”. Sich entschuldigen für takes the accusative: “entschuldigte sich für ihre Annahme”. The indirect question “wer auf das Foto für die Vereinsseite möchte” lets everyone choose.

Nach einem Aufräumtag am Fluss wollte die Organisatorin ein Gruppenfoto machen. Fast alle stellten sich vor die gesammelten Säcke. David blieb am Rand stehen. Die Organisatorin dachte, er sei nur schüchtern, und winkte ihn mehrfach heran. Er lächelte, kam aber nicht näher.
Als sie kurz zu ihm ging, erklärte David, dass er nicht auf einem veröffentlichten Foto erscheinen wollte. Beim Aufräumen hatte er gern geholfen. Das bedeutete für ihn nicht automatisch, dass sein Bild im Internet stehen sollte. Die Organisatorin entschuldigte sich für ihre Annahme.
Sie fragte die Gruppe noch einmal deutlich, wer auf das Foto für die Vereinsseite möchte. Zwei weitere Personen traten beiseite. David übernahm freiwillig die Kamera. Danach machten sie noch ein Bild nur von den gefüllten Säcken und den Arbeitshandschuhen. Für den kurzen Bericht wählten sie dieses zweite Bild. Es zeigte die gemeinsame Arbeit, ohne eine einzelne Person erkennbar zu machen.

Watch out
Readers may share the organiser’s idea that David is shy or unwilling to take part. He helped gladly: “Beim Aufräumen hatte er gern geholfen.” He simply did not want a published photo, and he even “übernahm freiwillig die Kamera”.
