The idea

Wagen is masculine and stays the same in the plural (die Wagen). Numbers after Wagen need no article: “Wagen 22”. Vorne and hinten are adverbs of place; “weiter hinten” means further back. Umgekehrt is a participle used as an adjective after sein: “Die Wagenreihung ist umgekehrt.” A statement with a rising voice, “Dann liegt mein Wagen weiter hinten?”, works as a question that checks what you have just concluded.

Other ways to say it

“In welchem Abschnitt hält Wagen zweiundzwanzig?” – Precise question using the platform sections; good for staff.

“Wo finde ich die erste Klasse heute?” – Short, neutral question when the order has changed.

Examples

  • Steht die erste Klasse heute vorne? Is first class at the front today?
  • Heute ist die Wagenreihung umgekehrt.Today the carriage order is reversed.
  • Dann liegt mein Wagen weiter hinten? Then is my carriage farther back?
  • Welche Nummer suchen Sie denn?Which number are you looking for?
  • Ich suche Wagen zweiundzwanzig.I am looking for carriage twenty-two.
  • Prüfen Sie dazu die aktuelle Anzeige.Check the current display for that.

Read-aloud uses a synthetic German voice available on your device. Voice quality and availability vary; it does not assess your pronunciation.

Watch out

“Dann ist mein Wagen weiter hinter?” → “Dann ist mein Wagen weiter hinten?”: Hinter is a preposition and needs a noun (hinter dem Bahnhof). Without a noun, use the adverb hinten.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Is first class at the front today?

    Show answer or example answer

Steht die erste Klasse heute vorne?

“Steht … vorne” describes position; erste Klasse is feminine, so the article is die, and “heute” signals that this may differ from usual.

  2. Put the words in order: Dann / hinten / liegt / mein / Wagen / weiter

    Show answer or example answer

Dann liegt mein Wagen weiter hinten?

“Dann” links the question to the news about the reversed order; liegen is used for where something is located on the platform.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Check the current display for that.

    Show answer or example answer

Prüfen Sie dazu die aktuelle Anzeige.

“Prüfen Sie” is a polite imperative; dazu refers back to finding the carriage, and “aktuelle Anzeige” stresses the current, not the printed, information.

Use it today

Look at your next train ticket or booking and practise saying your carriage number and seat aloud, then ask in which platform section the carriage stops.
