The idea

Die Einweisung is the formal instruction on equipment or safety; die Einführung is a broader introduction. “Eine Einweisung erhalten” means to receive one. The object can open the sentence for focus: “Dieses Gerät kenne ich …”, with the verb still second. “Noch nicht” means not yet. “Erst nach” and “erst wenn” express that something happens only after a condition. Many employers document safety instructions, so asking is expected rather than awkward.

Other ways to say it

“Mit dieser Maschine habe ich noch nie gearbeitet.” – Neutral; stresses lack of experience.

“Wer kann mir das Gerät zeigen?” – Simple and direct; asks for a person.

“Ich möchte das Gerät erst nach einer Einweisung benutzen.” – Clear and polite statement of your condition.

Examples

  • Dieses Gerät kenne ich noch nicht.I am not familiar with this device yet.
  • Haben Sie bereits eine Einweisung erhalten?Have you already received instruction?
  • Nein, ich brauche zuerst die vorgesehene Einführung. No, I first need the prescribed introduction.
  • Dann klären wir die zuständige Person dafür.Then let us identify the person responsible for it.
  • Ich beginne erst nach dieser Klärung.I will start only after that is clarified.
  • Gut, stellen Sie dabei alle offenen Verständnisfragen.Good; ask all outstanding comprehension questions during it.

Watch out

“Ich weiß dieses Gerät noch nicht.” → “Ich kenne dieses Gerät noch nicht.”: Kennen means to be familiar with a thing or person; wissen means to know a fact. For a device, the right verb is kennen. English “know” covers both.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I am not familiar with this device yet.

    Show answer or example answer

Dieses Gerät kenne ich noch nicht.

The object “Dieses Gerät” opens for emphasis, so “kenne” is second and “ich” third. “Noch nicht” says the familiarity is still to come.

  2. Put the words in order: brauche / die / Einführung / ich / Nein / vorgesehene / zuerst

    Show answer or example answer

Nein, ich brauche zuerst die vorgesehene Einführung.

“Nein” answers the question; the clause follows in normal order. “Zuerst” sets the order, and “die vorgesehene Einführung” is the planned induction.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Good; ask all outstanding comprehension questions during it.

    Show answer or example answer

Gut, stellen Sie dabei alle offenen Verständnisfragen.

A Sie imperative: “stellen Sie”. “Dabei” means during the instruction, and “alle offenen Verständnisfragen” is accusative plural after alle.
