The idea

Festhalten (to record) is separable, but after a modal the infinitive stays whole: “Könnten Sie … festhalten?” Schriftlich (in writing) contrasts with mündlich. Zwischen plus dative marks the part of a process: zwischen Prüfung und Ablage. Nummerieren (to number) and nachlesen (to look up again) are useful for instructions. Trotzdem (nevertheless) moves the verb into second position after it. Asking for written steps is common in German workplaces and rarely seen as weakness.

Other ways to say it

“Gibt es dafür eine schriftliche Anleitung?” – Neutral; asks whether documentation already exists.

“Darf ich mir die Schritte kurz aufschreiben?” – Polite; you write them yourself.

“Eine Checkliste würde mir sehr helfen.” – Indirect request with Konjunktiv II.

Examples

  • Könnten Sie die Arbeitsschritte kurz schriftlich festhalten?Could you briefly write down the work steps?
  • Welche Reihenfolge ist noch schwierig?Which sequence is still difficult?
  • Die Schritte zwischen Prüfung und Ablage. The steps between checking and filing.
  • Ich nummeriere diese Schritte in der Anleitung.I will number those steps in the instructions.
  • Dann kann ich sie bei der Übung nachlesen. Then I can consult them during practice.
  • Fragen Sie trotzdem nach, wenn ein Schritt unklar bleibt.Still ask if a step remains unclear.

Watch out

“Könnten Sie die Arbeitsschritte kurz schriftlich halten fest?” → “Könnten Sie die Arbeitsschritte kurz schriftlich festhalten?”: Separable verbs split only when they are the finite verb. After a modal like könnten, the infinitive festhalten stays together at the end.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Could you briefly write down the work steps?

    Show answer or example answer

Könnten Sie die Arbeitsschritte kurz schriftlich festhalten?

“Könnten Sie” makes the request polite. “Kurz” and “schriftlich” describe how, and the whole infinitive “festhalten” goes last.

  2. Put the words in order: Ablage / Die / Prüfung / Schritte / und / zwischen

    Show answer or example answer

Die Schritte zwischen Prüfung und Ablage.

An elliptical answer to “Welche Reihenfolge …?”: “Die Schritte zwischen Prüfung und Ablage.” Zwischen takes the dative; the nouns appear without articles.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Still ask if a step remains unclear.

    Show answer or example answer

Fragen Sie trotzdem nach, wenn ein Schritt unklar bleibt.

A Sie imperative of nachfragen with “trotzdem”. The wenn-clause puts “bleibt” at the end: if a step remains unclear.

Use it today

On your second day, your trainer explains how to process a returned item in seven steps. Ask her politely to write the steps down and say which part you find hardest.
