The idea

“Was meinen Sie mit …?” or “Meinen Sie mit X Y oder Z?” uses mit plus dative for the word in question. Die Planung (planning) and die Durchführung (execution) are classic contrasting nouns. A structured answer often follows situation, action, result; die Ausgangssituation is the starting point. Sequence with zuerst … danach, each followed by the verb. Asking for clarification in an interview is generally seen as careful, not weak.

Other ways to say it

“Darf ich kurz nachfragen, wie die Frage gemeint ist?” – Very polite; asks permission before clarifying.

“Geht es Ihnen eher um Planung oder um Umsetzung?” – Neutral; Umsetzung is a synonym for Durchführung.

“Könnten Sie die Frage bitte noch einmal anders formulieren?” – Polite request to rephrase the question.

Watch out

“Was bedeuten Sie mit Verantwortung?” → “Was meinen Sie mit Verantwortung?”: A person means something, so the verb is meinen; bedeuten is used for words and things: “Was bedeutet Verantwortung?” English “What do you mean” misleads learners.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: By responsibility, do you mean planning or implementation?

    Show answer or example answer

Meinen Sie mit Verantwortung die Planung oder die Durchführung?

A yes/no question with “Meinen Sie” first. “Mit Verantwortung” names the word in question, and the two options are accusative objects joined by oder.

  2. Put the words in order: aus / Beispiel / beschreibe / Dann / ein / ich / Kurs / letzten / meinem

    Show answer or example answer

Dann beschreibe ich ein Beispiel aus meinem letzten Kurs.

“Dann” opens, “beschreibe” follows, then “ich”. “Aus meinem letzten Kurs” is dative after aus and gives the source of the example.

  3. Write this sentence in German: After that I could propose an agreed sequence.

    Show answer or example answer

Danach konnte ich einen abgestimmten Ablauf vorschlagen.

“Danach” opens, so the modal “konnte” is second and “vorschlagen” last. “Einen abgestimmten Ablauf” is a masculine accusative with a participle adjective.

Use it today

An interviewer asks: “Wie gehen Sie mit Druck um?” Ask one clarifying question about whether they mean time pressure or difficult customers, then start your answer with the situation.
