The idea

Inzwischen (by now) and mittlerweile mark progress. Sicher here means confidently, not safely. A relative clause can describe the hard cases: “Anfragen, die nicht dem üblichen Muster folgen”, with the verb at the end and folgen taking the dative. Der Ausnahmefall is an exception. “Ableiten aus” plus dative means to derive from: daraus leiten wir … ab. “Gezielt üben” means focused practice.

Other ways to say it

“Die Standardfälle klappen inzwischen gut.” – Casual; klappen means to work out.

“Bei Sonderfällen bin ich noch unsicher.” – Honest and neutral about remaining gaps.

“Was wäre aus Ihrer Sicht der nächste sinnvolle Schritt?” – Asks the trainer for their view politely.

Examples

  • Die Grundaufgaben kann ich inzwischen sicher zuordnen.I can now reliably classify the basic tasks.
  • Bei welchem Schritt brauchen Sie noch Unterstützung? At which step do you still need support?
  • Bei Anfragen, die nicht dem üblichen Muster folgen. With enquiries that do not follow the usual pattern.
  • Dann üben wir gezielt solche Ausnahmefälle. Then let us practise those exceptional cases specifically.
  • Können wir dafür zwei konkrete Beispiele auswählen? Can we select two specific examples for that?
  • Ja, daraus leiten wir den nächsten Lernschritt ab.Yes, we will derive the next learning step from them.

Watch out

“Bei Anfragen, die nicht das übliche Muster folgen.” → “Bei Anfragen, die nicht dem üblichen Muster folgen.”: Folgen takes the dative, so das Muster becomes dem Muster. Learners use the accusative because English “follow a pattern” has a direct object.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I can now reliably classify the basic tasks.

    Show answer or example answer

Die Grundaufgaben kann ich inzwischen sicher zuordnen.

The object “Die Grundaufgaben” opens, so the modal “kann” is second and “ich” third. “Inzwischen sicher” shows progress, and “zuordnen” closes the sentence.

  2. Put the words in order: Anfragen / Bei / dem / die / folgen / Muster / nicht / üblichen

    Show answer or example answer

Bei Anfragen, die nicht dem üblichen Muster folgen.

An elliptical answer starting with “Bei Anfragen”. The relative clause “die nicht dem üblichen Muster folgen” puts folgen last and uses the dative.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Yes, we will derive the next learning step from them.

    Show answer or example answer

Ja, daraus leiten wir den nächsten Lernschritt ab.

“Daraus” means from these examples. “Leiten … ab” is the split form of ableiten, and “den nächsten Lernschritt” is masculine accusative.
