The idea

Dürfen is the modal for permission: “Darf ich …?” Zusehen (to watch) is separable but stays whole after a modal. “Bei etwas zusehen” uses bei plus dative; “jemandem zusehen” takes a dative person. Zunächst means initially. Der Übergang is the transition between two steps. “Erklären” takes a dative person and an accusative thing: Ihnen meine Schritte. Watching first, often called Hospitieren in German, is common in many trainings.

Other ways to say it

“Kann ich Ihnen dabei einmal über die Schulter schauen?” – Friendly idiom: to look over someone’s shoulder.

“Dürfte ich bei Ihnen hospitieren?” – Formal; hospitieren means to sit in and observe.

“Ich würde das gern einmal sehen, bevor ich es selbst mache.” – Neutral; gives your reason in a bevor-clause.

Examples

  • Darf ich bei diesem Vorgang zunächst zusehen?May I initially observe this process?
  • Welchen Teil möchten Sie besser verstehen?Which part would you like to understand better?
  • Den Übergang zwischen Prüfung und Rückmeldung. The transition between checking and responding.
  • Ich erkläre Ihnen dabei meine einzelnen Schritte.I will explain my individual steps as I go.
  • Anschließend fasse ich den Ablauf selbst zusammen.Afterwards I will summarize the procedure myself.
  • Dann können wir Ihr Verständnis direkt besprechen. Then we can discuss your understanding directly.

Watch out

“Darf ich bei diesem Vorgang zunächst sehen zu?” → “Darf ich bei diesem Vorgang zunächst zusehen?”: With a modal verb, a separable verb stays together as an infinitive at the end. Splitting zusehen into “sehen zu” only happens when it is the finite verb.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: May I initially observe this process?

    Show answer or example answer

Darf ich bei diesem Vorgang zunächst zusehen?

“Darf ich” asks for permission. “Bei diesem Vorgang” is dative after bei, and the whole infinitive “zusehen” closes the question.

  2. Put the words in order: Den / Prüfung / Rückmeldung / Übergang / und / zwischen

    Show answer or example answer

Den Übergang zwischen Prüfung und Rückmeldung.

A short answer to “Welchen Teil …?”, so it keeps the accusative: “Den Übergang”. Zwischen takes the dative for the two steps.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then we can discuss your understanding directly.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann können wir Ihr Verständnis direkt besprechen.

“Dann” opens, “können” follows, and “besprechen” closes. “Ihr Verständnis” is the accusative object; “direkt” means right away.

Use it today

A colleague is about to process a customer complaint, a task you have never done. Ask whether you may watch, say which step interests you most, and offer to summarise afterwards.
