The idea

Use so groß wie for equality and größer als for inequality. Translate the whole comparison frame instead of treating Dutch als as a fixed German equivalent.

One contrast, not a prediction about every learner

Dutch commonly uses even ... als or zo ... als for equality. Standard German uses so ... wie; its als belongs with unequal comparative forms. Regional German comparative wie exists, but it is not the target of this written standard pattern.

Individual experience, dialect and other languages you know can change which comparisons help. Use the contrast to notice a German choice; do not treat it as a label for a whole group of people.

Repair the transfer

  • Dieser Raum ist so groß als der andere. Dieser Raum ist so groß wie der andere.

Use so groß wie for equality and größer als for inequality. Translate the whole comparison frame instead of treating Dutch als as a fixed German equivalent.

Examples

  • Dieser Raum ist so breit wie der Saal nebenan. This room is as wide as the hall next door.
  • Die neue Bank ist länger als die alte Gartenbank. The new bench is longer than the old garden bench.
  • Mein Rucksack ist so schwer wie deiner. My backpack is as heavy as yours.
  • Der direkte Weg ist schneller als die Strecke am Fluss. The direct route is faster than the route by the river.
  • Heute ist der Hof so ruhig wie am Sonntag.Today the courtyard is as quiet as on Sunday.
  • Die zweite Kiste ist leichter als die erste. The second box is lighter than the first.

Read-aloud uses a synthetic German voice available on your device. Voice quality and availability vary; it does not assess your pronunciation.

Watch out

Do not generalize a source-language pattern to every German sentence. Use so groß wie for equality and größer als for inequality. Translate the whole comparison frame instead of treating Dutch als as a fixed German equivalent.
