The idea
Learn German gender independently even for familiar-looking cognates. Compare Dutch de tafel and de deur with German der Tisch and die Tür.
One contrast, not a prediction about every learner
Dutch definite articles distinguish de and het in the singular. German der, die and das require a three-way lexical choice; a Dutch de noun does not tell you whether its German equivalent is masculine or feminine.
Individual experience, dialect and other languages you know can change which comparisons help. Use the contrast to notice a German choice; do not treat it as a label for a whole group of people.
