The idea
Ask whether the sentence is about permission or courage. Use dürfen for permission and sich trauen, etwas zu tun for courage.
One contrast, not a prediction about every learner
Dutch durven means to dare, whereas German dürfen normally expresses permission. German sich trauen or wagen conveys daring, so the similar forms do not express the same decision.
Individual experience, dialect and other languages you know can change which comparisons help. Use the contrast to notice a German choice; do not treat it as a label for a whole group of people.
Repair the transfer
Darfst du springen? fragt eindeutig nach deinem Mut.Traust du dich zu springen? fragt nach deinem Mut.Ask whether the sentence is about permission or courage. Use dürfen for permission and sich trauen, etwas zu tun for courage.
Examples

Do not generalize a source-language pattern to every German sentence. Ask whether the sentence is about permission or courage. Use dürfen for permission and sich trauen, etwas zu tun for courage.
