The idea

Write ich, du, wir or the relevant noun subject in a complete neutral German clause. An imperative is a different construction and often omits du or ihr.

One contrast, not a prediction about every learner

Italian finite verbs can often stand without an explicit subject pronoun because person is recoverable. German neutral complete statements normally include a subject, even when the verb ending also indicates person; informal omissions belong to particular contexts.

Individual experience, dialect and other languages you know can change which comparisons help. Use the contrast to notice a German choice; do not treat it as a label for a whole group of people.

Repair the transfer

  • Morgen komme um acht. als neutraler vollständiger Satz Morgen komme ich um acht.

Write ich, du, wir or the relevant noun subject in a complete neutral German clause. An imperative is a different construction and often omits du or ihr.

Examples

  • Morgen komme ich eine Viertelstunde früher zur Probe.Tomorrow I will come to the rehearsal fifteen minutes earlier.
  • Heute bleiben wir nach dem Kurs noch im Garten.Today we stay in the garden after the course.
  • Den letzten Abschnitt lese ich später zu Hause.I read the final section at home later.
  • Hast du den kleinen Schlüssel wiedergefunden?Have you found the little key again?
  • Meine Schwester bringt einen selbst gebackenen Kuchen mit.My sister brings a homemade cake.
  • Bitte öffne das Fenster für einen kurzen Moment. Please open the window for a brief moment.

Watch out

Do not generalize a source-language pattern to every German sentence. Write ich, du, wir or the relevant noun subject in a complete neutral German clause. An imperative is a different construction and often omits du or ihr.
