The idea

Count ordinary count nouns directly in German. Use Stück or a container word only when the intended meaning really calls for a piece, unit or measured quantity.

One contrast, not a prediction about every learner

Mandarin commonly puts a classifier between a numeral and a noun, as in 一本书. German ordinarily counts a countable noun directly, as ein Buch or zwei Bücher; measure phrases are needed for amounts such as a glass of water, not for every noun.

Individual experience, dialect and other languages you know can change which comparisons help. Use the contrast to notice a German choice; do not treat it as a label for a whole group of people.

Repair the transfer

  • Ich lese ein Stück Buch. für ein ganzes Buch Ich lese ein Buch.

Examples

  • Ich nehme zwei schmale Bücher mit auf die Reise.I take two slim books with me on the journey.
  • Für den Besuch brauchen wir vier zusätzliche Stühle. We need four additional chairs for the visit.
  • Auf dem Tisch stehen drei Gläser Wasser. There are three glasses of water on the table.
  • Sie kauft ein Stück Kuchen für die Pause. She buys a piece of cake for the break.
  • Wir bestellen fünf neue Hefte für die Lerngruppe. We order five new notebooks for the study group.
  • In der Küche stehen zwei Flaschen Apfelsaft. There are two bottles of apple juice in the kitchen.

Read-aloud uses a synthetic German voice available on your device. Voice quality and availability vary; it does not assess your pronunciation.
