The idea

Start with ich habe, du hast or the matching subject form. Mark a masculine indefinite object as einen, as in einen Schlüssel.

One contrast, not a prediction about every learner

Russian often expresses possession with у plus a possessor and есть. German everyday possession commonly uses haben: the possessor is the nominative subject and the possessed thing is an accusative object.

Individual experience, dialect and other languages you know can change which comparisons help. Use the contrast to notice a German choice; do not treat it as a label for a whole group of people.

Repair the transfer

  • Bei mir ist einen Schlüssel. Ich habe einen Schlüssel.

Start with ich habe, du hast or the matching subject form. Mark a masculine indefinite object as einen, as in einen Schlüssel.

Examples

  • Ich habe einen Ersatzschlüssel für die Hintertür.I have a spare key for the back door.
  • Unsere Nachbarin hat eine kleine Werkstatt. Our neighbor has a small workshop.
  • Habt ihr noch einen freien Platz im Auto?Do you still have a free seat in the car?
  • Der Verein hat seit kurzem einen neuen Raum. The association has recently acquired a new room.
  • Wir haben heute genug Zeit für eine zweite Runde. We have enough time for a second round today.
  • Du hast doch die aktuelle Adresse der Gruppe. You do have the group's current address.

Watch out

Do not generalize a source-language pattern to every German sentence. Start with ich habe, du hast or the matching subject form. Mark a masculine indefinite object as einen, as in einen Schlüssel.
