The idea

When introducing one unspecified countable thing, consider ein or eine. When referring back to that same thing, use its definite article with the case required in the new sentence.

One contrast, not a prediction about every learner

Ukrainian has no article system directly equivalent to German ein and der. German articles help signal whether a countable referent is introduced, already identifiable or connected to a known context.

Individual experience, dialect and other languages you know can change which comparisons help. Use the contrast to notice a German choice; do not treat it as a label for a whole group of people.

Repair the transfer

  • Ich sehe einen Hund. Ein Hund gehört unserer Nachbarin. Ich sehe einen Hund. Der Hund gehört unserer Nachbarin.

When introducing one unspecified countable thing, consider ein or eine. When referring back to that same thing, use its definite article with the case required in the new sentence.

Examples

  • Vor dem Haus steht ein Lieferwagen mit offener Tür.A delivery van with an open door stands outside the house.
  • Der Lieferwagen bringt heute neue Regale. The delivery van brings new shelving units today.
  • Auf meinem Tisch liegt eine unbekannte Karte. An unfamiliar card lies on my table.
  • Die Karte zeigt einen Weg durch den Park. The card shows a route through the park.
  • Wir mieten einen kleinen Raum für die Probe. We rent a small room for the rehearsal.
  • In dem Raum stehen bereits sechs Stühle. There are already six chairs in the room.

Read-aloud uses a synthetic German voice available on your device. Voice quality and availability vary; it does not assess your pronunciation.

Watch out

Do not generalize a source-language pattern to every German sentence. When introducing one unspecified countable thing, consider ein or eine. When referring back to that same thing, use its definite article with the case required in the new sentence.
