The idea

Putting the task first (“Die zusätzliche Aufgabe schaffe ich …”) makes it the topic and softens the refusal, because the sentence starts with the work, not with ich. Nicht vollständig negates only the degree. Counter-offers use können plus a deadline with bis. The Konjunktiv II hätte in “Morgen früh hätte ich dafür wieder Zeit” presents the alternative as an offer, not a demand. Gemeinsam abstimmen invites the other person to decide with you.

Other ways to say it

“Heute wird das bei mir leider knapp.” – Neutral and soft; knapp signals tight time without a flat no.

“Einen Teil kann ich heute noch übernehmen, den Rest morgen.” – Neutral; splits the task into an offer.

“Das bekomme ich heute nicht mehr hin.” – Colloquial; hinbekommen means to manage, common in speech.

Examples

  • Die zusätzliche Aufgabe schaffe ich heute nicht vollständig.I cannot finish the additional task today.
  • Welcher Teil wäre noch realistisch?Which part would still be realistic?
  • Die Vorbereitung kann ich bis Feierabend abschließen.I can finish the preparation by the end of the day.
  • Für den Rest brauchen wir eine andere Lösung. We need another solution for the rest.
  • Morgen früh hätte ich dafür wieder Zeit.I would have time for it again tomorrow morning.
  • Dann stimmen wir diesen Zeitplan gemeinsam ab.Then let us agree on this schedule together.

Watch out

“Die zusätzliche Aufgabe schaffe ich heute nicht komplett machen.” → “Die zusätzliche Aufgabe schaffe ich heute nicht vollständig.”: Schaffen already means to get something done, so it takes the task as a direct object and needs no second verb. Adding machen copies English “manage to do”.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I cannot finish the additional task today.

    Show answer or example answer

Die zusätzliche Aufgabe schaffe ich heute nicht vollständig.

The object comes first for emphasis, schaffe stays in position two, the subject ich follows, and “nicht vollständig” comes late to limit the negation.

  2. Put the words in order: abschließen / bis / Die / Feierabend / ich / kann / Vorbereitung

    Show answer or example answer

Die Vorbereitung kann ich bis Feierabend abschließen.

Again the object opens the sentence; modal kann is second, abschließen is at the end, and “bis Feierabend” sets the limit as the end of the working day.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then let us agree on this schedule together.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann stimmen wir diesen Zeitplan gemeinsam ab.

Abstimmen is separable: stimmen is second, ab goes last. Wir with dann works like “let us”, and gemeinsam stresses a shared decision.

Use it today

Your manager adds a presentation to a full day. Say in two sentences which part you can finish today and when you could do the rest.
