The idea

Der Arbeitsplatz means a workstation or desk, and in desk-sharing offices people book one via an app or list. “Gelten für” plus accusative asks what a booking applies to: “für denselben Zeitraum”. Derselbe combines article and selbe and declines both parts: denselben. The passive “wurde … übernommen” describes a system not yet updated. Bevor sends the verb to the end: “bevor jemand den Platz belegt”.

Other ways to say it

“Der Platz scheint doppelt gebucht zu sein.” – Neutral; scheinen zu softens the statement.

“Hast du den Tisch für morgen auch reserviert?” – Informal; asks a colleague directly.

“Laut System haben wir beide diesen Platz gebucht.” – Neutral; laut plus noun names the source of information.

Examples

  • Für diesen Arbeitsplatz sehe ich zwei Reservierungen.I can see two reservations for this workspace.
  • Gelten beide für denselben Zeitraum?Do both apply to the same period?
  • Ja, beide beginnen morgen um neun.Yes, both begin at nine tomorrow.
  • Dann prüfen wir die aktuelle Buchungsübersicht. Then let us check the current booking overview.
  • Vielleicht wurde eine Änderung noch nicht übernommen.Perhaps a change has not yet been applied.
  • Wir klären das, bevor jemand den Platz belegt. We will clarify it before someone occupies the desk.

Watch out

“Gelten beide für den selben Zeitraum?” → “Gelten beide für denselben Zeitraum?”: Derselbe, dieselbe, dasselbe are written as one word with the article, and both parts take endings: denselben. Learners split it as in English “the same”.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I can see two reservations for this workspace.

    Show answer or example answer

Für diesen Arbeitsplatz sehe ich zwei Reservierungen.

“Für diesen Arbeitsplatz” (für plus accusative) opens the sentence, sehe comes second, ich follows, and zwei Reservierungen is the object.

  2. Put the words in order: beginnen / beide / Ja / morgen / neun / um

    Show answer or example answer

Ja, beide beginnen morgen um neun.

Ja confirms. Beide is the plural subject, so beginnen is plural; morgen um neun gives day and time without a noun.

  3. Write this sentence in German: We will clarify it before someone occupies the desk.

    Show answer or example answer

Wir klären das, bevor jemand den Platz belegt.

Main clause plus a bevor clause: the verb belegt goes to the end. Einen Platz belegen means to take or occupy a seat.

Use it today

You arrive and find someone at the desk you booked. Write two polite sentences: describe what the booking app shows and suggest checking it together.
