The idea

“Bei etwas ein Problem sehen” is a common, polite frame for objections; bei takes the dative. The reason is stated as a fact with a time preposition: vor plus dative (vor dem Eingang). Der Eingang here means the arrival of documents, a typical office word. A short contrast without verbs gives the alternative: “Zuerst die Unterlagen, danach die Prüfung.” “Lassen Sie uns …” is a formal way to say let us.

Other ways to say it

“Ich habe bei dem Zeitplan noch Bedenken.” – Neutral and soft; Bedenken means reservations.

“So wie geplant klappt das zeitlich nicht.” – Informal and direct; klappen means to work out.

“Darf ich auf einen Punkt im Ablauf hinweisen?” – Formal and polite; asks permission before objecting.

Watch out

“Ich sehe bei diesem Vorschlag einen Terminproblem.” → “Ich sehe bei diesem Vorschlag ein Terminproblem.”: In a compound noun, the last part decides the gender: das Problem, so das Terminproblem. Learners often take the gender of the first part, der Termin.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I see a scheduling problem with this proposal.

    Show answer or example answer

Bei diesem Vorschlag sehe ich ein Terminproblem.

“Bei diesem Vorschlag” (dative) opens the sentence and names the topic; sehe stays second, then ich, then the accusative object ein Terminproblem.

  2. Put the words in order: beginnt / dem / der / Die / Eingang / Prüfung / Unterlagen / vor

    Show answer or example answer

Die Prüfung beginnt vor dem Eingang der Unterlagen.

A plain statement of fact. Vor takes the dative here (vor dem Eingang) because it marks time, and der Unterlagen is genitive plural.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Let us add that dependency to the plan.

    Show answer or example answer

Lassen Sie uns diese Abhängigkeit im Plan ergänzen.

“Lassen Sie uns” plus infinitive is a formal suggestion including everyone. “Im Plan ergänzen” means to add something to the plan.
