The idea

Auffallen works like gefallen: the person who notices is in the dative (mir), the thing noticed is the subject (eine falsche Zahl). In the perfect it uses sein: “ist aufgefallen”. “Beim Eintragen” (bei plus nominalised infinitive) means while entering. The passive question “Ist die Übersicht bereits weitergegeben worden?” asks whether the error has spread. Mitteilen is separable: “teile … mit”.

Other ways to say it

“Ich glaube, ich habe mich bei einer Zahl vertippt.” – Informal and honest; sich vertippen means to make a typing error.

“Mir ist leider ein Fehler unterlaufen.” – Formal and polite; common in emails to managers or clients.

“In der Tabelle stimmt eine Zahl nicht, das schaue ich mir gerade an.” – Neutral; reports and adds that you are already checking.

Examples

  • Mir ist beim Eintragen eine falsche Zahl aufgefallen.I noticed an incorrect number while entering data.
  • Ist die Übersicht bereits weitergegeben worden?Has the overview already been passed on?
  • Die letzte Fassung liegt noch im Entwurfsordner. The latest version is still in the draft folder.
  • Dann halten wir zuerst den aktuellen Stand fest. Then let us record the current state first.
  • Ich prüfe, welche Zeilen betroffen sind.I will check which rows are affected.
  • Bitte teile Beobachtung und vermutete Ursache getrennt mit. Please report the observation and suspected cause separately.

Watch out

“Ich bin beim Eintragen eine falsche Zahl aufgefallen.” → “Mir ist beim Eintragen eine falsche Zahl aufgefallen.”: With auffallen the noticer is not the subject but the dative object, as with gefallen. “Ich bin aufgefallen” would mean that you yourself attracted attention.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: I noticed an incorrect number while entering data.

    Show answer or example answer

Mir ist beim Eintragen eine falsche Zahl aufgefallen.

Mir (dative) opens the sentence, ist is the auxiliary in position two, eine falsche Zahl is the subject, and the participle aufgefallen closes the clause.

  2. Put the words in order: Die / Entwurfsordner / Fassung / im / letzte / liegt / noch

    Show answer or example answer

Die letzte Fassung liegt noch im Entwurfsordner.

Liegen describes where documents are stored. “Im Entwurfsordner” (in dem, dative for location) shows the version has not left the drafts yet; noch means still.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Please report the observation and suspected cause separately.

    Show answer or example answer

Bitte teile Beobachtung und vermutete Ursache getrennt mit.

Informal imperative with du: teile first, prefix mit at the end. The two objects have no article, and getrennt asks for them to be reported separately.
