Give a work estimate with uncertainty in German

The idea

Liegen bei plus dative gives a value: “liegt bei etwa zwei Stunden”. Hedging words such as etwa, ungefähr, rund or voraussichtlich mark a number as an estimate. Conditions follow abhängen von plus dative; in the plural the noun adds -n: “von den fehlenden Rückmeldungen”. “Sich lassen” plus infinitive expresses that something can be done: “So lässt sich die Schätzung besser einordnen” means it can be judged more easily.

Other ways to say it

“Ich rechne mit ungefähr zwei Stunden.” – Neutral; rechnen mit means to expect or allow for.

“Grob geschätzt sind es zwei Stunden.” – Neutral to informal; grob geschätzt means as a rough estimate.

“Wenn alle Angaben rechtzeitig kommen, brauche ich etwa zwei Stunden.” – Neutral; puts the condition first.

Watch out

“Das hängt von den fehlenden Rückmeldungen.” → “Das hängt von den fehlenden Rückmeldungen ab.”: Abhängen is separable, and its prefix ab must appear at the end of the clause. Without it, hängen means to hang, so the sentence loses its meaning.
