The idea
“Was meinst du mit …?” is the standard way to ask what someone means by a word or phrase; the quoted words follow mit unchanged. Hier points to the spot in the text. Pronouns refer back to nouns by gender: der Abschnitt becomes ihn in the accusative. Sollen asks for an instruction: “Soll ich …?”. The closing “das war mit dem Kommentar gemeint” uses sein plus participle to describe the intended meaning.
Other ways to say it
“Wie genau ist der Kommentar zu verstehen?” – Neutral to formal; a little more distant than “Was meinst du”.
“Kannst du mir ein Beispiel geben, was zu viel ist?” – Informal; asks for a concrete example.
“Was genau meinen Sie mit zu ausführlich?” – Formal with Sie; same question for a manager or teacher.
Examples
- Was meinst du hier mit zu ausführlich? What do you mean by too detailed here?
- Dieser Abschnitt wiederholt die vorherigen Angaben. This section repeats the previous information.
- Soll ich ihn kürzen oder ganz verschieben?Should I shorten it or move it entirely?
- Die neuen Informationen sollten erhalten bleiben. The new information should remain.
- Dann entferne ich nur die Wiederholungen. Then I will remove only the repetitions.
- Genau, das war mit dem Kommentar gemeint.Exactly; that was what the comment meant.

Watch out
“Was meinst du hier bei zu ausführlich?” → “Was meinst du hier mit zu ausführlich?”: The fixed pattern is “etwas mit etwas meinen”. Learners pick bei or von by analogy with English “by”, but German always uses mit in this question.

Show answer or example answer
Was meinst du hier mit zu ausführlich?
Was is the object, meinst agrees with du, hier points to the spot, and “mit zu ausführlich” quotes the comment after mit.
Put the words in order: ganz / ich / ihn / kürzen / oder / Soll / verschieben
Show answer or example answer
Soll ich ihn kürzen oder ganz verschieben?
Soll ich asks what the reviewer wants. Ihn replaces “den Abschnitt” (masculine accusative), and oder offers two infinitives: kürzen or ganz verschieben.
Write this sentence in German: Exactly; that was what the comment meant.
Show answer or example answer
Genau, das war mit dem Kommentar gemeint.
Genau confirms. “Mit dem Kommentar gemeint sein” describes the intended meaning; war is past tense because the comment was written earlier.
