The idea

Ohne plus accusative states a precondition: “Ohne die Zahlen …”. Ask for the latest possible point with spätestens: “Wann brauchen Sie die Zahlen spätestens?” A consequence follows with dann plus müssen: “Dann müssen wir den Abgabetermin neu abstimmen.” Der Abgabetermin is the submission date. “Etwas an jemanden weitergeben” (separable, an plus accusative) means to pass information on. Short answers without a verb, such as “Bis morgen früh …”, are normal in dialogue.

Other ways to say it

“Der Bericht hängt an den Zahlen aus dem Vertrieb.” – Neutral; hängen an means to depend on something to continue.

“Kommen die Zahlen später, verschiebt sich die Abgabe.” – Neutral, slightly formal; a condition without wenn, verb first.

“Ohne die Zahlen sind uns die Hände gebunden.” – Idiomatic: our hands are tied. Fine in speech and emails.

Examples

  • Ohne die Zahlen können wir den Bericht nicht abschließen.We cannot finish the report without the figures.
  • Wann brauchen Sie die Zahlen spätestens?By when do you need the figures at the latest?
  • Bis morgen früh für den aktuellen Zeitplan.By tomorrow morning for the current schedule.
  • Was passiert bei einer späteren Lieferung? What happens if they arrive later?
  • Dann müssen wir den Abgabetermin neu abstimmen. Then we will need to agree on a new submission date.
  • Ich gebe diese Abhängigkeit an das Team weiter.I will pass this dependency on to the team.

Watch out

“Ohne den Zahlen können wir den Bericht nicht abschließen.” → “Ohne die Zahlen können wir den Bericht nicht abschließen.”: Ohne always takes the accusative. Learners often use the dative because mit, its opposite, takes the dative. In the plural the accusative article is die.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: We cannot finish the report without the figures.

    Show answer or example answer

Ohne die Zahlen können wir den Bericht nicht abschließen.

The precondition “Ohne die Zahlen” fills position one, so the modal können comes second, then wir; nicht stands before the infinitive abschließen at the end.

  2. Put the words in order: aktuellen / Bis / den / früh / für / morgen / Zeitplan

    Show answer or example answer

Bis morgen früh für den aktuellen Zeitplan.

An elliptical answer: the verb is left out because the question supplies it. Bis morgen früh gives the deadline, für den aktuellen Zeitplan the reason.

  3. Write this sentence in German: I will pass this dependency on to the team.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich gebe diese Abhängigkeit an das Team weiter.

Weitergeben splits into gebe and weiter. “An das Team” is an plus accusative for the recipient, and diese Abhängigkeit is the object.

Use it today

Write an email sentence to a colleague: the presentation cannot be finished without their photos, ask for them by a specific day, and say what happens if they come later.
