The idea

The prefix nach- often means “again, to check”: nachrechnen, nachzählen, nachprüfen. Unabhängig as an adverb says how to do it. Scope is set with prepositions of place: oberhalb takes the genitive (oberhalb der Linie). Erst danach in “Bitte vergleiche dein Ergebnis erst danach mit meinem” means not before; meinem stands for “meinem Ergebnis” in the dative after mit.

Other ways to say it

“Kannst du einmal drüberschauen, ohne meine Zahl zu kennen?” – Informal; drüberschauen means to have a look over something.

“Würden Sie die Summe bitte gegenprüfen?” – Formal with Sie; gegenprüfen means to cross-check.

“Rechne bitte selbst, bevor du meine Lösung ansiehst.” – Informal and direct; makes the independence explicit.

Examples

  • Könntest du diese Summe unabhängig nachrechnen?Could you recalculate this total independently?
  • Welche Zeilen gehören in die Berechnung?Which rows belong in the calculation?
  • Nur die freigegebenen Positionen oberhalb der Linie.Only the approved items above the line.
  • Ich verwende dafür die Originalwerte.I will use the original values for that.
  • Bitte vergleiche dein Ergebnis erst danach mit meinem. Please compare your result with mine only afterwards.

Watch out

“Könntest du diese Summe unabhängig rechnen nach?” → “Könntest du diese Summe unabhängig nachrechnen?”: With a modal verb such as könntest, a separable verb stays together as an infinitive at the end: nachrechnen. It splits only when it is itself the finite verb.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Could you recalculate this total independently?

    Show answer or example answer

Könntest du diese Summe unabhängig nachrechnen?

Könntest du is a polite request between colleagues on du terms; the separable infinitive nachrechnen stays whole at the end, and unabhängig says how.

  2. Put the words in order: der / die / freigegebenen / Linie / Nur / oberhalb / Positionen

    Show answer or example answer

Nur die freigegebenen Positionen oberhalb der Linie.

Short answer without a verb. Nur limits the scope; freigegebenen is a participle adjective, and oberhalb takes the genitive: der Linie.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then we can identify possible discrepancies more easily.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann erkennen wir mögliche Abweichungen leichter.

Dann opens the sentence, so erkennen comes before wir. Leichter is the comparative of leicht, and mögliche Abweichungen is accusative plural.
