The idea

Zeigen takes two objects: the person in the dative (mir) and the thing in the accusative (ein passendes Muster). “Es geht jemandem um etwas” asks what matters to someone; um takes the accusative: “um die gewünschte Detailtiefe”. Answers can drop everything but the key phrase: “Vor allem um …”. Formal Sie suits a manager or client; with a colleague on du terms say “Kannst du mir … zeigen?”.

Other ways to say it

“Gibt es eine Vorlage, an der ich mich orientieren kann?” – Neutral; sich orientieren an means to use as a guide.

“Hast du ein Beispiel von letztem Mal?” – Informal with du; asks for a previous piece of work.

“Wie ausführlich soll das Ergebnis werden?” – Neutral; asks directly about the level of detail.

Watch out

“Können Sie mich ein passendes Muster zeigen?” → “Können Sie mir ein passendes Muster zeigen?”: With zeigen, the person who sees something is the indirect object and takes the dative: mir, not mich. The thing shown is already the accusative object.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Can you show me a suitable example?

    Show answer or example answer

Können Sie mir ein passendes Muster zeigen?

A polite yes-no question with Können Sie. Mir is dative (to me), “ein passendes Muster” accusative neuter with the strong adjective ending -es.

  2. Put the words in order: allem / Detailtiefe / die / gewünschte / um / Vor

    Show answer or example answer

Vor allem um die gewünschte Detailtiefe.

Short answer to “Geht es Ihnen um …?”: the verb is omitted. Um requires the accusative, so it is “um die gewünschte Detailtiefe”.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Please also check the changed requirements.

Bitte prüfen Sie dabei auch die geänderten Anforderungen.

Imperative with Sie, verb first. Dabei means “while doing so”, and the plural “die geänderten Anforderungen” has the weak ending -en.
