The idea

Brauchen plus accusative states a need; the purpose is introduced with für: für den Termin. Adjectives with -bar describe what can be done: beschreibbar, nutzbar, verfügbar. A negative question such as “Ist ein Bildschirm allein nicht ausreichend?” checks an assumption politely. “Achten auf” plus accusative means to pay attention to or make sure of: “auf passende Stifte”. Ergänzen in a booking means to add details.

Other ways to say it

“Gibt es in dem Raum ein Whiteboard oder ein Flipchart?” – Neutral; asks what the room already has.

“Wir bräuchten einen Raum mit Beamer und Tafel.” – Polite Konjunktiv II; Beamer is the usual German word for a projector.

“Denk bitte an Stifte, die auch schreiben.” – Informal and a little humorous; between colleagues.

Examples

  • Für den Termin brauchen wir eine beschreibbare Tafel. We need a board we can write on for the meeting.
  • Ist ein Bildschirm allein nicht ausreichend? Is a screen alone not enough?
  • Wir möchten gemeinsam eine Skizze entwickeln. We want to develop a sketch together.
  • Dann prüfe ich einen Raum mit Whiteboard. Then I will check for a room with a whiteboard.
  • Bitte achte auch auf passende Stifte. Please also make sure there are suitable markers.
  • Ich ergänze das in der Raumreservierung.I will add that to the room reservation.

Watch out

“Bitte achte auch an passende Stifte.” → “Bitte achte auch auf passende Stifte.”: Achten always combines with auf plus accusative. Learners mix it up with denken an, which has a similar meaning of keeping something in mind.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: We need a board we can write on for the meeting.

    Show answer or example answer

Für den Termin brauchen wir eine beschreibbare Tafel.

“Für den Termin” opens the sentence, so brauchen precedes wir. Eine beschreibbare Tafel is feminine accusative with the ending -e.

  2. Put the words in order: eine / entwickeln / gemeinsam / möchten / Skizze / Wir

    Show answer or example answer

Wir möchten gemeinsam eine Skizze entwickeln.

Möchten plus infinitive states the plan; gemeinsam explains why a writable board matters. The infinitive entwickeln stands at the end.

  3. Write this sentence in German: I will add that to the room reservation.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich ergänze das in der Raumreservierung.

Ergänzen means to add. Das refers to the markers, and “in der Raumreservierung” (dative) names the booking entry.
