The idea

Fehlen takes the missing thing as subject and an optional person in the dative: “Mir fehlen die Etiketten.” Place comes first for clarity: “Im Materialschrank …”. Nachsehen (separable) means to check; in the perfect: “hast … nachgesehen”. Nur noch means only … left: “nur noch leere Verpackungen”. Der Bedarf is the required quantity, a common word in ordering. Ungefähr marks the number as an estimate.

Other ways to say it

“Die Versandetiketten sind alle.” – Colloquial: alle sein means used up.

“Wir haben keine Etiketten mehr.” – Neutral and simple; kein … mehr means none left.

“Könnte jemand neue Versandetiketten bestellen?” – Polite request; turns the report into an action.

Watch out

“Im Materialschrank fehlt die Versandetiketten.” → “Im Materialschrank fehlen die Versandetiketten.”: The subject is die Versandetiketten, which comes after the verb here. Because it is plural, the verb must be fehlen. Learners often use the singular because the sentence starts with a place.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: The shipping labels are missing from the supply cupboard.

    Show answer or example answer

    Im Materialschrank fehlen die Versandetiketten.

“Im Materialschrank” (dative, location) opens the sentence, fehlen is second and plural, and the subject die Versandetiketten follows.

  2. Put the words in order: Dort / leere / liegen / noch / nur / Verpackungen

    Show answer or example answer

Dort liegen nur noch leere Verpackungen.

Dort refers to the lower shelf and opens the sentence. Liegen is used for flat objects, and nur noch means nothing else is left.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then let us find a solution for that requirement.

Dann klären wir eine Lösung für diesen Bedarf.

Dann and wir make a joint plan. Klären here means to sort out; “für diesen Bedarf” is für plus accusative masculine.
