The idea

“Teil von etwas sein” or, more formally, “Teil des Auftrags sein” uses the genitive without an article before Teil. Der Auftrag is the commission or job, der Umfang its scope, der Aufwand the effort. Sollten in the Konjunktiv II makes a recommendation sound polite. “Welche Auswirkung hätte …?” uses hätte to ask about a hypothetical consequence. Vor der Entscheidung is vor plus dative.

Other ways to say it

“Das geht über den ursprünglichen Auftrag hinaus.” – Neutral and clear; hinausgehen über means to exceed.

“Gehört das noch zum Projekt?” – Informal and short; fine with close colleagues.

“Für diese Ergänzung müssten wir den Zeitplan anpassen.” – Polite Konjunktiv II; names the consequence directly.

Examples

  • Ist diese Ergänzung Teil des vereinbarten Auftrags? Is this addition part of the agreed task?
  • Sie wurde erst heute vorgeschlagen. It was only proposed today.
  • Dann sollten wir Umfang und Termin neu besprechen. Then we should discuss the scope and deadline again.
  • Welche Auswirkung hätte die Ergänzung? What impact would the addition have?
  • Sie braucht eine zusätzliche Datenprüfung. It requires an additional data check.
  • Ich beschreibe den Aufwand vor der Entscheidung.I will describe the effort before the decision.

Watch out

“Ist diese Ergänzung ein Teil von dem vereinbarten Auftrag?” → “Ist diese Ergänzung Teil des vereinbarten Auftrags?”: The version with von is understandable but sounds clumsy in work German. The usual pattern is Teil without an article plus genitive; the genitive masculine adds -s: des Auftrags.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Is this addition part of the agreed task?

    Show answer or example answer

Ist diese Ergänzung Teil des vereinbarten Auftrags?

Yes-no question with ist first. Teil has no article, and des vereinbarten Auftrags is masculine genitive with -en on the adjective and -s on the noun.

  2. Put the words in order: besprechen / Dann / neu / sollten / Termin / Umfang / und / wir

    Show answer or example answer

Dann sollten wir Umfang und Termin neu besprechen.

Sollten (Konjunktiv II) makes the suggestion polite. Umfang und Termin need no articles as a pair, and neu besprechen means to discuss again.

  3. Write this sentence in German: I will describe the effort before the decision.

    Show answer or example answer

Ich beschreibe den Aufwand vor der Entscheidung.

Beschreiben takes den Aufwand as object. Vor der Entscheidung (dative) says the description comes first, so the decision is informed.
