The idea

Completed work is described with sein plus participle (Zustandspassiv): “sind abgeschlossen”, “ist gelb markiert”. It describes a state, not an action. Pending work uses ausstehen, a separable verb: “steht aus”. The genitive “der letzten Tabelle” says whose approval is missing. Ask about gaps with “Was fehlt noch für …?”. In a handover, keep the order done, open, location, starting point.

Other ways to say it

“Bis Schritt zwei ist alles erledigt.” – Neutral and compact; good in a spoken handover.

“Offen ist nur noch die Freigabe der Tabelle.” – Neutral; putting offen first highlights the remaining point.

“Ich habe dir den aktuellen Stand im Ordner abgelegt.” – Informal with du; says where the latest version is.

Examples

  • Die ersten beiden Schritte sind abgeschlossen. The first two steps are complete.
  • Was fehlt noch für die Übergabe? What is still missing for the handover?
  • Die Freigabe der letzten Tabelle steht aus.Approval of the final table is outstanding.
  • Liegt die Datei im gemeinsamen Ordner? Is the file in the shared folder?
  • Ja, der offene Punkt ist gelb markiert.Yes, the outstanding point is marked yellow.
  • Dann beginne ich bei dieser Markierung. Then I will start at that mark.

Watch out

“Die Freigabe der letzten Tabelle ist ausstehend.” → “Die Freigabe der letzten Tabelle steht aus.”: Learners copy English “is outstanding” with sein plus a participle. Ausstehend exists as an attribute (die ausstehende Freigabe), but as a predicate German uses the finite verb: steht aus.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: The first two steps are complete.

    Show answer or example answer

Die ersten beiden Schritte sind abgeschlossen.

After the definite article die, both ersten and beiden take the weak ending -en; “sind abgeschlossen” describes the finished state of the steps.

  2. Put the words in order: aus / der / Die / Freigabe / letzten / steht / Tabelle

    Show answer or example answer

Die Freigabe der letzten Tabelle steht aus.

The separable verb ausstehen splits: steht in position two, aus at the end. “Der letzten Tabelle” is genitive and tells you which approval.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then I will start at that mark.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann beginne ich bei dieser Markierung.

Dann opens the sentence, so beginne comes before ich. “Bei dieser Markierung” is bei plus dative and names the exact starting point.

Before your holiday, write three sentences for a colleague: what is finished, what is still outstanding, and where the file and the open point can be found.
