How learning works

Read, listen and put it together

  • Read the kanji

Small kana readings sit above the kanji. Beginner lessons use larger type and show readings over every kanji; later lessons show fewer readings.

  • See the pieces

Example sentences are split into their parts, so you can see how they fit together and rebuild them in practice.

  • Hear Japanese

Listen with a synthetic Japanese voice on your device. Voice quality varies, and it does not assess your pronunciation.

  • Practise and check

Each lesson ends with questions, answers and explanations in your language. A free account saves your practice results.
