The idea

Precise descriptions combine location prepositions with the dative (“neben der Steckdose”, “an der Wand”) and size comparisons such as handtellergroß (palm-sized) or münzgroß (coin-sized). “Genauer” is the comparative of genau. “Ergänzen” means to add to an existing text: “Ich ergänze die Lage in der Notiz.” Asking “Darf ich die Beschreibung noch einmal lesen?” is a normal, polite step before signing any record.

Other ways to say it

“Können wir noch die Größe des Flecks dazuschreiben?” – Asks to add one detail; genitive des Flecks.

“Ich möchte ein Foto davon machen, bevor wir unterschreiben.” – Common practice to document damage; neutral and clear.

Examples

  • Können wir diesen Fleck genauer beschreiben? Can we describe this stain more precisely?
  • Meinen Sie die Stelle neben der Steckdose?Do you mean the spot next to the socket?
  • Ja, sie ist ungefähr handtellergroß.Yes, it is roughly the size of a palm.
  • Ich ergänze die Lage in der Notiz.I will add the location to the note.
  • Darf ich die Beschreibung noch einmal lesen?May I read the description again?
  • Natürlich, prüfen Sie die Formulierung in Ruhe.Of course; check the wording at your leisure.

Watch out

“Meinen Sie die Stelle neben die Steckdose?” → “Meinen Sie die Stelle neben der Steckdose?”: The spot is fixed in place, so neben answers “where?” and takes the dative. The accusative after neben is only for putting something somewhere.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Can we describe this stain more precisely?

    Show answer or example answer

Können wir diesen Fleck genauer beschreiben?

“Können wir” proposes a joint action; “diesen Fleck” is masculine accusative, and the comparative “genauer” modifies “beschreiben”.

  2. Put the words in order: handtellergroß / ist / Ja / sie / ungefähr

    Show answer or example answer

    Ja, sie ist ungefähr handtellergroß.

“Sie” refers to die Stelle; “ungefähr” softens the measurement, and “handtellergroß” is a compound adjective: as big as a palm.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Of course; check the wording at your leisure.

    Show answer or example answer

Natürlich, prüfen Sie die Formulierung in Ruhe.

“Natürlich” agrees; the Sie-imperative “prüfen Sie” takes “die Formulierung”, and “in Ruhe” means without hurry.
