The idea

Asphaltiert and geschottert are participles used as adjectives after sein. “Oder” in a yes/no question offers two choices. Hinter, like other two-way prepositions, takes the dative for location: hinter der Brücke. “Es gibt” + accusative states that something exists: eine befestigte Alternative. Konjunktiv II müssten in “Das müssten wir … vergleichen” makes a cautious suggestion rather than a firm answer.

Other ways to say it

“Kann man die Strecke gut mit dem Rennrad fahren?” – Neutral; asks about suitability rather than surface type.

“Wie ist der Weg hinter dem Wald, eher holprig?” – Casual question; holprig means bumpy.

Examples

  • Ist dieser Abschnitt asphaltiert oder geschottert? Is this section paved or gravelled?
  • Hinter der Brücke beginnt ein Schotterweg.A gravel path starts beyond the bridge.
  • Gibt es eine befestigte Alternative? Is there a paved alternative?
  • Sie können die Straße am Kanal prüfen. You can check the road by the canal.
  • Wie lang ist der zusätzliche Weg ungefähr?Roughly how long is the extra distance?
  • Das müssten wir auf der Karte vergleichen. We would need to compare that on the map.

Watch out

“Hinter die Brücke beginnt ein Schotterweg.” → “Hinter der Brücke beginnt ein Schotterweg.”: The sentence says where the gravel path begins, not where something moves to, so hinter takes the dative der, not the accusative die.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Is this section paved or gravelled?

    Show answer or example answer

Ist dieser Abschnitt asphaltiert oder geschottert?

Verb-first question with ist; two participles linked by “oder” offer a choice, and “dieser Abschnitt” refers to the part ahead.

  2. Put the words in order: Alternative / befestigte / eine / es / Gibt

    Show answer or example answer

    Gibt es eine befestigte Alternative?

“Gibt es” asks whether something exists; “eine befestigte Alternative” is accusative with the adjective ending -e.

  3. Write this sentence in German: We would need to compare that on the map.

    Show answer or example answer

Das müssten wir auf der Karte vergleichen.

“Müssten” is Konjunktiv II and signals a guess; “auf der Karte” is dative, and “vergleichen” ends the sentence.

Use it today

Plan a short bike ride near you and write two German questions you would ask at a bike rental about the surface and length of the route.
