The idea

Kinderwagenplatz is a compound: Kinderwagen + Platz, and the last part decides the gender (der Platz). “Noch” in the question means “still available”. The bis-clause “bis alle ausgestiegen sind” sends the verb to the end, and aussteigen forms its perfect with sein because it is a movement. “Ob es passt” is an indirect yes/no question with ob and the verb at the end. Sie is the normal form with driver and strangers.

Other ways to say it

“Ist hier noch Platz für einen Kinderwagen?” – Neutral and simple; works at any door.

“Könnten Sie bitte ein Stück zur Seite gehen? Ich komme mit dem Kinderwagen nicht durch.” – Polite request to passengers standing in the space.

Examples

  • Ist in der Mitte noch Kinderwagenplatz? Is there still pram space in the middle?

  • Können wir kurz nach dem Platz schauen? Can we briefly check the space?
  • Warten Sie bitte, bis alle ausgestiegen sind. Please wait until everyone has got off.

Watch out

“Warten Sie bitte, bis alle sind ausgestiegen.” → “Warten Sie bitte, bis alle ausgestiegen sind.”: Bis introduces a subordinate clause, so the conjugated verb sind moves to the very end, after the participle ausgestiegen.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Is there still pram space in the middle?

    Show answer or example answer

Ist in der Mitte noch Kinderwagenplatz?

Verb first for a yes/no question: “Ist … noch Kinderwagenplatz?” The place “in der Mitte” is dative because it answers “where?”.

  2. Put the words in order: dem / Können / kurz / nach / Platz / schauen / wir

    Show answer or example answer

Können wir kurz nach dem Platz schauen?

“Können wir” makes a soft joint suggestion; “nach dem Platz schauen” means to check on the space, with nach plus dative.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Then we will see together whether it fits.

    Show answer or example answer

Dann sehen wir gemeinsam, ob es passt.

“Dann” opens the main clause, so the verb “sehen” comes second; the ob-clause at the end is an indirect yes/no question.

Use it today

Imagine boarding a busy bus with a pram or a large suitcase. Say one sentence asking about space and one asking someone to make room.
