The idea
Halten means “to stop” for vehicles: “Der Bus hält am Sportplatz.” Am is an dem, used for places along a route. Der Halt is the stop as an event; die Haltestelle is the place. Haltewunsch on a display is a noun compound meaning “stop wish”, i.e. a stop has been requested. “Dann wurde der Halt schon angefordert” uses the passive in the past (wurde + participle) because who pressed the button does not matter.
Other ways to say it
“Ich möchte an der nächsten Haltestelle aussteigen.” – Neutral; tell the driver or a neighbour if you cannot reach the button.
“Können Sie mir sagen, wann wir am Sportplatz sind?” – Polite request to the driver when you do not know the route.

Watch out
“Ich möchte aussteigen bei der nächsten Haltestelle.” → “Ich möchte an der nächsten Haltestelle aussteigen.”: With a modal verb the infinitive goes to the end of the sentence. Also, German uses an der Haltestelle, not bei, for getting off at a stop.
