The idea

Nachkommen is separable: “kommt … nach”. “In wenigen Minuten” uses in + dative plural for a time in the future. Die Begleitung is feminine, so the pronoun is sie, even for a man. Bescheid sagen (to let someone know) takes a dative: dem Empfang Bescheid sagen. Kennen is used for knowing a way or a place: “den Weg kennen”.

Other ways to say it

“Mein Mann kommt gleich nach; er parkt noch.” – Everyday and specific; names the person and the reason.

“Könnten Sie meiner Begleitung bitte sagen, wo ich bin?” – Polite request to reception; meiner Begleitung is dative.

Examples

  • Meine Begleitung kommt in wenigen Minuten nach. The person accompanying me will arrive in a few minutes.
  • Soll sie sich dann hier melden?Should they report here then?
  • Ja, wenn das für Sie passt.Yes, if that works for you.
  • Ich sage dem Empfang kurz Bescheid.I will let reception know briefly.
  • Sie kennt den Weg zum Wartebereich noch nicht. She does not yet know the way to the waiting area.
  • Wir zeigen ihr, wo Sie warten. We will show her where you are waiting.

Watch out

“Ich sage den Empfang kurz Bescheid.” → “Ich sage dem Empfang kurz Bescheid.”: Bescheid sagen needs the person or place being informed in the dative. Bescheid is already the accusative object, so der Empfang becomes dem Empfang.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: The person accompanying me will arrive in a few minutes.

    Show answer or example answer

Meine Begleitung kommt in wenigen Minuten nach.

The separable verb nachkommen splits: “kommt” second, “nach” last; “in wenigen Minuten” gives the future time.

  2. Put the words in order: das / für / Ja / passt / Sie / wenn

    Show answer or example answer

Ja, wenn das für Sie passt.

“Ich sage … Bescheid” is a fixed phrase; “dem Empfang” is dative, and “kurz” keeps the action small.

  3. Write this sentence in German: We will show her where you are waiting.

    Show answer or example answer

Wir zeigen ihr, wo Sie warten.

Zeigen takes dative “ihr” for the person and an object clause “wo Sie warten” with the verb at the end.
