The idea

German says “im Stau stehen” for being stuck in traffic. “Ich komme später” is the natural phrase for arriving late; sich verspäten is a more formal option. Estimates combine voraussichtlich, etwa or ungefähr with a number. Trotzdem (anyway, still) in the question asks whether the plan stands despite the delay. Vorbeikommen is separable but stays together after soll. Reception staff use Sie.

Other ways to say it

“Ich verspäte mich leider um etwa zehn Minuten.” – Polite and slightly formal; um gives the amount of delay.

“Schaffe ich den Termin noch, wenn ich um halb zehn da bin?” – Neutral question about whether the appointment still works.

Examples

  • Mein Bus steht im Stau; ich komme später. My bus is stuck in traffic; I will be late.
  • Wie groß ist die Verspätung ungefähr?Roughly how long is the delay?
  • Voraussichtlich etwa fünfzehn Minuten.Probably about fifteen minutes.
  • Ich gebe die Information an die Anmeldung weiter.I will pass the information to reception.
  • Soll ich trotzdem direkt vorbeikommen?Should I still come straight over?
  • Bitte warten Sie kurz auf unsere Rückmeldung. Please wait briefly for our response.

Watch out

“Ich bin spät für meinen Termin.” → “Ich komme später zu meinem Termin.”: “Ich bin spät” is a literal translation of “I am late” and sounds odd. German uses ich komme später, ich verspäte mich or ich bin zu spät after the fact.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: My bus is stuck in traffic; I will be late.

    Show answer or example answer

Mein Bus steht im Stau; ich komme später.

Two main clauses joined by a semicolon: the reason “steht im Stau”, then the consequence “ich komme später”.

  2. Put the words in order: etwa / fünfzehn / Minuten / Voraussichtlich

    Show answer or example answer

    Voraussichtlich etwa fünfzehn Minuten.

An elliptical answer without verb; “voraussichtlich” and “etwa” mark the time as an estimate.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Please wait briefly for our response.

    Show answer or example answer

Bitte warten Sie kurz auf unsere Rückmeldung.

“Bitte warten Sie” is a polite imperative; “auf unsere Rückmeldung” uses warten auf with the accusative.
