The idea
Questions about location use “in welchem/welcher” plus dative: in welchem Gebäude, in welcher Abteilung. Neben, auf and in take the dative when they describe where something is: “neben der Cafeteria”, “auf der anderen Seite”, “im Erdgeschoss”. Floors are counted with ordinals after im: im ersten Stock, im zweiten Stock. “Sich anmelden” means to check in at reception, which in German hospitals is usually the first step.
Other ways to say it
“Wo finde ich die Ambulanz der Kardiologie?” – Names the department directly; Ambulanz is the outpatient clinic.
“Ich habe einen Termin in Haus C. Wie komme ich dorthin?” – Useful at the main entrance or information desk.
Examples
- In welchem Gebäude ist die Sprechstunde? In which building is the consultation?
- Auf Ihrer Einladung steht Haus C.Your invitation says building C.
- Ist der Eingang neben der Cafeteria? Is the entrance next to the cafeteria?
- Nein, er liegt auf der anderen Seite. No, it is on the other side.
- Melde ich mich zuerst im Erdgeschoss?Do I check in on the ground floor first?

Watch out
“Ist der Eingang neben die Cafeteria?” → “Ist der Eingang neben der Cafeteria?”: Neben is a two-way preposition. For a fixed position, answering “where?”, it takes the dative, so die becomes der. The accusative is only for movement towards a place.
