The idea

Aufschreiben takes a dative for the person and an accusative for the thing: jemandem etwas aufschreiben (mir diese Hinweise). The same pattern works with ausdrucken: “Ich drucke Ihnen die Terminangaben aus.” Festhalten means to record in writing. Nachlesen is to read something again later. “Vor allem den nächsten … Termin” is accusative because it continues the object of festhalten.

Other ways to say it

“Kann ich das bitte schriftlich bekommen?” – Short, neutral request for anything in writing.

“Würden Sie mir das bitte per E-Mail schicken?” – Polite; whether a practice sends emails varies.

Examples

  • Könnten Sie mir diese Hinweise bitte aufschreiben?Could you please write these instructions down for me?
  • Welche Stelle möchten Sie festhalten?Which part would you like to record?
  • Vor allem den nächsten vereinbarten Termin.Mainly the next agreed appointment.
  • Ich drucke Ihnen die Terminangaben aus.I will print the appointment details for you.
  • Dann kann ich sie zu Hause nachlesen. Then I can read them again at home.
  • Bitte prüfen Sie vor dem Gehen das Datum. Please check the date before leaving.

Watch out

“Könnten Sie mich diese Hinweise aufschreiben?” → “Könnten Sie mir diese Hinweise aufschreiben?”: The person who receives the written note is the indirect object, so it is dative mir. Mich would be an accusative object, which aufschreiben already has.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: Could you please write these instructions down for me?

    Show answer or example answer

Könnten Sie mir diese Hinweise bitte aufschreiben?

Dative “mir” for the person, accusative “diese Hinweise” for the thing; the infinitive “aufschreiben” ends the polite question.

  2. Put the words in order: allem / den / nächsten / Termin / vereinbarten / Vor

    Show answer or example answer

Vor allem den nächsten vereinbarten Termin.

Elliptical answer continuing the object: “den nächsten vereinbarten Termin” has two adjectives with -en after den.

  3. Write this sentence in German: Please check the date before leaving.

    Show answer or example answer

Bitte prüfen Sie vor dem Gehen das Datum.

“Prüfen Sie” is the imperative; “vor dem Gehen” uses a nominalised infinitive after vor, meaning before leaving.
