The idea

Mitmachen is separable and pairs with bei plus dative: beim Training, bei der Gruppe. The more formal “teilnehmen an” takes an plus dative: am Training teilnehmen. “Welche” as a pronoun means some: “Sie können welche ausleihen” (you can borrow some). “Am Seiteneingang der Halle” combines an + dem with a genitive (der Halle) showing whose entrance. Sie or du depends on the club; sports clubs often switch to du quickly.

Other ways to say it

“Kann ich bei euch mal ein Probetraining machen?” – Casual du-form; common in sports clubs.

“Bieten Sie ein kostenloses Probetraining an?” – Neutral and formal; asks about cost without assuming it.

  • Für den Anfang können Sie welche ausleihen. You can borrow some to begin with.

Watch out

“Darf ich einmal an das Training teilnehmen?” → “Darf ich einmal am Training teilnehmen?”: Teilnehmen an always takes the dative, because it names an activity you are part of, not a direction. An dem contracts to am.

Try it yourself

  1. Translate into German: May I join the training once?

    Show answer or example answer

Darf ich einmal beim Training mitmachen?

“Darf” asks permission; “einmal” limits the request to one visit, and the separable infinitive “mitmachen” stays together at the end.

  2. Put the words in order: Brauche / dafür / eigene / ich / Schläger / schon

    Show answer or example answer

Brauche ich dafür schon eigene Schläger?

“Brauche” begins a yes/no question; “dafür” points to the trial session, and “schon” asks whether this is needed already at this stage.

  3. Write this sentence in German: We will wait at the side entrance to the hall.

    Show answer or example answer

Wir warten am Seiteneingang der Halle.

“Am Seiteneingang” is a fixed meeting point in the dative, and “der Halle” is a genitive saying which building the entrance belongs to.
